143 Kentucky Derby Weekend: Thurby, Oaks, and Derby 2017 Recap!

May 8, 2017 by Gracie

Happy Monday! Monday after Derby is always a hard day for everyone in Louisville.. After such an amazing weekend, it is definitely a shock back into reality ! 😉 Another memorable Derby weekend is now in the books though and I am already counting down the days til next year..Shop my outfits and read about the details of each day below!!

This year was my first year going to “Thurby”, which is becoming a pretty popular thing in Louisville for the Thursday before Derby! In the past, Oaks has always been known as a day for the locals but as Oaks gets more and more popular, I think Thurby is really turning into the new “day for the locals”! It was so much fun to really kick off the weekend and head to the track after attending our “Kindergarten Derby” at school.

In the morning for the Kindergarten Derby, I re-wore the Thakoon dress I wore to Derby last year. It is such a classic and I was so excited for another opportunity to wear it! This year was far colder than usual with rain and a high of 60 on Thursday, so this dress was perfect because it’t thick material kept me warm while the pink flowers still made it appropriate for spring. This shoes were also awesome because they were appropriate for school with closed toes and they were so comfortable !!

Then before leaving for Thurby with my family, I changed into one of my favorite dresses from Banana Republic. Since they were honoring ‘Donate Life’ at Thurby this year whose colors are Blue and Green, my whole family wore blue since this cause is very close to our hearts! I wore this dress with rain boots since it raining literally all day, but luckily we were sitting in Millionaire’s Row so the rain didn’t effect me too much ! The long sleeves on this dress also kept me warm from that cool breeze but was still very appropriate for the spring event.

While my sister was much colder than I was, her dress looked amazing and was apart of my Derby shop from BCBG!

This year at Thurby, the track was alive but it was not overwhelmingly crowded like Oaks and Derby can be. My family and I had so much fun seeing so many friends from all over the city, spending quality time with each other, and betting on some horses and watching races! Next year, I am definitely going to make every effort to go to Thurby again.

Oaks:

There’s no other way to put it than to just admit the weather on Oaks was terrible. It rained all day and the high was 50. The morning of, I honestly debated on not going since I was going to the infield (which is completely outside with no cover) with friends, but I am so glad I went and my outfit could have no been more perfect! I literally spent hours debating on what to wear so I could be warm, I wouldn’t ruin any of my nice clothes, and so that I still looked appropriate for the spring event. In the end, I chose to wear one of my favorite pink sweaters from top shop, my classic high-waisted black mini skirt, and my black ‘leather’ Ali Ro rain jacket! I received compliments all day, was so comfortable, and had so much fun. While everyone was so cold, I was cozy in my sweater. My hair may have been a complete mess, but there was nothing I could’ve done about that so the only option was to just embrace it !

Derby:

Now onto DERBY! Luckily for Derby the weather cleared up and was beautiful by the afternoon! My outfit, courtesy of Black Halo, was absolutely amazing. I received so many compliments and was absolutely obsessed with this look! While it was still a little chilly, my pants kept me warm and the sun on my shoulders felt absolutely amazing. I am so excited to wear this outfit over and over again pairing the pieces with different tops and bottoms, different accessories, and making totally new looks!

For Derby, we sat in a box on the third floor and had the best time betting and spending time with friends. The track was a bit overwhelmingly crowded, but it contributed to the energy and was an overall day to remember! Even though I lost every bet I made, I was so excited to see Always Dreaming win the 143rd Kentucky Derby !

Thurby is something I’m sure my fiancé would enjoy before Derby since he went to college in Louisville and some of his old friends are still there. I wasn’t even aware that this was a thing. We are making plans to attend next year, also so I can see his old stomping grounds 🙂

Wow what a fun time and I am so happy to read about the Thurby and Derby because it is one of those things I’ve seen and wanted to attend but not sure if I will ever make it out there. It is sad that it rained the night before and it was so cold, but you definitely picked a good look to weather the storm. I LOVE the black two piece you chose for the Derby and that pop of pink in the fascinator is amazing! A chic and elegant look and not too over the top. What an amazing experience and one I hope to one day attend as well. xoxo, Christine

Girlfriend, that Ali Ro rainjacket/dress is the most genius piece! I love how it combines practical with glamorous. And you looked smokin’ for Derby! The wide-legged pants are totally chic on you! Sounds like you had so much fun!

This derby most certainly allows you to play with fashion in a fun way and I’m glad you made it through it all (almost) without any troubles. That just goes to show that you’ll have to have a plan B at any point of time in case the weather gets bad like it did and you were right in choosing something warm instead of a piece you’d freeze in. As for the final look I’ll join in on the crowd giving you compliments as the Black Halo look is absolutely stunning on you! Welcome back to “real life” and hopefully you’ve had a blast 🙂
    xoxo

This is my first time hearing of Thurby, and it just looks so fun as I go through your photos of the event 🙂 Attending the derby is not part of the culture in California so it’s awesome learning about this event. It’s unfortunate it rained in Oaks but it looks like you all had a great time!
