Alright I’m making it public.. I am doing the Whole30 and currently on day 8! I know, I know, if I have been doing this for 8 days I probably should have announced it earlier than now but..I wanted to test the waters before I dived in.
FIRST, some background. How/Why I began eating healthy in the first place..
Ever since middle school I have always eaten pretty healthy, but honestly needed a change. In my early middle school days, I was the complete opposite of a healthy eater but it all changed during lent of seventh grade. As all my readers probably know by now, I love to challenge myself and always have-even when I was little. So in seventh grade I decided I was going to give up Coca Cola for lent..which was huge for me. I drank 1-2 cokes every single day, and I have to say all 40 days of lent were dreadful. I could not wait for lent to be over and to enjoy my beloved coke, but then when I ordered a coke at Easter Brunch, it tasted nasty. I was convinced the waiter had put something in my drink, this could not be Coke, no way. To my surprise (and disappointment) it was. In 40 days my tastebuds had completely changed and I hated coke! It took me a while to accept the fact but once I did, I really realized how much better I felt and it was because I was no longer drinking coke (a.k.a. filling my body with poison). I had more energy, my swimming was improving, I was drinking more water, and I started to really love it. Ever since then I stopped eating cheat puffs, cut back on the sweets, and gradually began making healthier and healthier choices.
NOW, Why I am doing the Whole30..
Now to today…I eat majority healthy but definitely have my splurges and honestly needed a change. So last weekend when we drove to Nashville, I was stocking around on instagram (because what else would I do?) and kept coming across some of my favorite bloggers (+ some new ones) who had been participating/participated in the Whole30 and claimed amazing results. I was really intrigued so decided to read more..and more..and more.. until I had read the entire Whole30 website and felt like an expert. When I first started with reading the rules and saw there were no beans, no grains, and no dairy (I don’t eat dairy but love my yogurt and granola), I thought there was no way. But we still had a ways to go until we were in Nashville, so I still kept reading. The website continued to explain all the benefits such as improved athletic performance, faster metabolism from the detox, more energy, better skin, and so much more.. I wanted to do it but I still couldn’t get past the fact I couldn’t have brown rice, beans, Ezekiel Bread, Yogurt, and so many more foods I practically lived on. I thought it would be too hard. Then at one point the website said “It is not hard. Don’t you dare tell us this is hard. Beating cancer is hard. Birthing a baby is hard. Losing a parent is hard. Drinking your coffee black. Is. Not. Hard”. This made me put things into perspective. I thought it’s only 30 days, it’s for my own good, and if I don’t like it I have every right to say I’m quitting, but as of now I am going to do it.
How Week 1 has been..
This week has been so much better than I ever could have imagined! Day 2, 3, and 4 were hard, I got midday headaches from the lack of sugar, I wanted bread and pretzels sometimes, but I quickly got over this and since day 5 I swear I have never felt so great in my life. I already have stopped craving unhealthy foods; I do not feel the need to snack for no reason; I have had more energy than ever (this is seriously no joke I feel like I could run a marathon at any point in the day and my energy used crash at 3pm after school before); and I treat food as fuel. I no longer eat because I am bored but I recognize what makes my body feel better and what my body needs at that point in time.
So what have I been eating?
-For breakfast I still just eat a banana since I wake up at 4:30 AM to do my cardio before school (my challenge for next week is to try and get my body used to eating a bigger breakfast)! I also eat my banana with my new Collagen Latte though, which I am in love with. I will never go back to my old coffee with almond milk creamer again! To make my new latte I blend my morning coffee with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides and a teaspoon of coconut oil. I promise, it’s way better than it sounds.
-After I work out, I make Paleo Egg White Frittatas with slices of smoked salmon! I adore these frittatas and look forward to them every morning. I make them by mixing egg whites, green beans, onions, and mushrooms and then bake them in a cupcake pan in the oven.
-Midday I always have a bottle of coconut water to replenish my electrolytes from my morning workout and for an extra potassium boost, and I also have either have some carrots and celery with almond butter, an apple with almond butter, hardboiled eggs, a banana, an RX Bar, or a homemade bag of mixed nuts. It just depends on what I am craving that day !
-For lunch I usually have scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or grilled chicken, an avocado, and baked sweet potato
-In the afternoon before I lift some weights or go to a barre class I usually have one of my snack options I listed earlier, but a different option than I ate that morning
-Then I eat some more egg white frittatas..
-Then for dinner I have a sweet potato or baked potato, grilled chicken or grilled salmon, and some steamed broccoli.
Next week I cannot wait to try more recipes and keep you updated on this journey of mine..But LONG STORY SHORT..While everybody is different and I am only 8 days in, so far I am loving the Whole30 and highly recommend it to anyone interested in trying it! What are your thoughts? Interests? Reservations? Questions? I love to hear from you !! I also wanted to know if you would be interested in me posting my recipes…I am happy to share them if you would like! Feel free to comment below or email me if you want to be a little more private. I’d really appreciate it!

I’ve never heard of this whole30 challenge, but I’ll definitely have to look into it. I don’t eat beans on a regular basis, but I have already cut out dairy completely from my diet since I know it’s really bad for the skin. Dairy has soo much hormones that can wreak havoc on your skin apparently. So for me, I would just need to focus on cutting out grains, so this would definitely be doable for me. π

I really want to try out this whole30 challenge! I consider myself a pretty healthy eater overall but I’ve been more and more intrigued by trying out a diet that will help me stay more consistent. Thanks for sharing this! I can’t wait to hear more about how it turns out.

I actually heard about this challenge also in a podcast and was intrigued. Maybe I will pursue it during April. Can’t wait to hear about your experience and keep it up!
I’ve not heard of this challenge, but I’m always up for a good challenge. However I do wonder how I’d survive with my regular dosage of a few “cheats” every now and then, but then again, when you set your mind on something, your mind is set. Period. I’ll see how you’ll progress and might join the challenge! Keep me updated! π

This is amazing!! Congrats on completing your first week. It’s always hard starting a new diet (I did a cleanse in all of february) but it’s so rewarding!! I’d definitely like to try the whole30! Also that collagen latte! Sounds so good for you π

That food sounds so good! My kind of meals! I eat like this all the time, I feel horrible if I don’t. But I also HATE soft drinks and lollies and stuff. Gross. Hoping your month goes well. Keep us posted! I’m half way through a yoga and pilates challenge month, I start each morning with a long class and I love how it sets me up.

I’ve heard about really good results from Whole 30. I wish I could try it, but I’m unfortunately allergic to nearly every suggested food to eat in replacement of the “typical” foods haha. But I’m glad it seems to be going well for you. Good luck on the next few weeks!

I have heard of this from friends who did this a couple of years ago and some new friends this year. It’s something I want to try since my body doesn’t react well with a lot of different food. Thanks for sharing this post and your experience with it. I’d love to see more!

Heard so many great things about it that I’m tempted to give it a try.
Maybe when I finish my Africa project I will try.

What a great idea! I’ve had a similar experience to you with coke, but with chocolate. Now I hate having it haha

Whoa I need to follow the Whole30 food plan! It serious sounds like the most healthy thing ever and I’m all about that. I cut refined sugar out of my diet for Lent and I’m not going to lie, it’s been a challenge some days, but I agree with you that your tastebuds can change!!
Eating healthy can be such a challenge but I love how you documented it all! You’re awesome for doing this challenge!
